On Modernity: (General Prologue p3)
In a sense, modernity involves a complex interaction between the following four historical processes: political, economic, social, and cultural. The establishment and legitimization of secular political rights, the creation of the modern nation-state, the formation of the market economy and the process of industrialization, the decline of the traditional social order and the differentiation and division of labor in society, as well as the decline of religion and the rise of secular culture, are processes that profoundly reflect the formation of modern society.
It is true that modernity is not a single process or result, rather, it is full of contradictions and confrontations of its own. The conflict between social existence and its culture is very sharp. Modernity as a cultural or aesthetic concept always seems to be in opposition to modernity as a social category, and this is what many Western thinkers have pointed out as the contradiction of modernity and its crisis. Since the Enlightenment, Romanticism, Modernism and Postmodernism, various cultural movements seem to have been playing a kind of "rebellious role".

To be modern is to find ourselves in a situation that allows ourselves and the world to be adventurous, powerful, joyful, growing and changing, but at the same time can destroy what we have, as Berman puts it. All that we know and are. It draws us into a vast vortex of eternal division and renewal, resistance and contradiction, ambiguity and pain.
